Ratings that combine to 90%

These examples use 38 CFR 4.25 only. Rounding happens once, at the end, so 85 and 88 both become 90%. They are math illustrations. They do not describe a typical medical history. If two arms or two legs are involved, 38 CFR 4.26 can change the combined value. The calculator handles that when you tag each limb.

One 90% rating

A single rating is already on a 10-point step, so nothing is combined.

  1. One rating of 90% stays 90%.

70% and 50%

Two ratings combined under 38 CFR 4.25.

  1. Order by severity: 70, 50.
  2. 70 combined with 50: 70 + 50 × 30% = 85 → 85
  3. Combined value 85 rounds to the nearest 10: 90%.

80% and 40%

Two ratings combined under 38 CFR 4.25.

  1. Order by severity: 80, 40.
  2. 80 combined with 40: 80 + 40 × 20% = 88 → 88
  3. Combined value 88 rounds to the nearest 10: 90%.

50%, 50%, and 40%

Three ratings combined in order of severity, then rounded once.

  1. Order by severity: 50, 50, 40.
  2. 50 combined with 50: 50 + 50 × 50% = 75 → 75
  3. 75 combined with 40: 75 + 40 × 25% = 85 → 85
  4. Combined value 85 rounds to the nearest 10: 90%.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 90% VA disability in 2026 with no dependents?

The official rate for a veteran alone is the first row of the table on this page, from VA.gov, effective December 1, 2025. Spouse, parents, and children use the other published rows. The 2027 column is an estimate.

What ratings combine to 90%?

Under 38 CFR 4.25, 70% combined with 50% is 85, which rounds to 90%. 80% combined with 40% is 88, which also rounds to 90%. The steps are on this page. A single 90% rating is already 90%.

Does 90% plus another rating reach 100%?

Not every added rating does. On the 100% page, 90% combined with 50% produces a combined value of 95, which rounds to 100%. A smaller added rating can remain at 90% after rounding. Use the calculator for a specific set.
