70% VA Disability Pay

At a 70% combined rating, VA’s official 2026 rate for a veteran alone is $1,808.45 per month, effective December 1, 2025. Dependent amounts apply at 30% and above. A 70% combined rating is also part of the TDIU percentage test in 38 CFR 4.16(a) when the disabilities are arranged the way that section requires.

Where 70% fits in the TDIU percentage test

38 CFR 4.16(a) allows a total rating, when the schedular rating is less than total, if the person is unable to secure or follow a substantially gainful occupation because of service-connected disabilities and the percentages are met: one disability at 60% or more, or two or more disabilities with at least one at 40% and a combined rating of 70% or more. The TDIU percentage check tests those branches, including the regulation’s “one disability” groupings. It does not decide unemployability. Paragraph (b) extra-schedular referral is explained on that page and is not decided here.

Ratings that combine to 70%

Each example below is computed with 38 CFR 4.25. The 50% and 30% pair is an example written in the regulation. The others are further illustrations of the same math. They are not a census of typical claims. Mark paired arms or legs in the calculator if 38 CFR 4.26 may apply.

One 70% rating

A single rating is already on a 10-point step, so nothing is combined.

  1. One rating of 70% stays 70%.

50% and 30%

Example from 38 CFR 4.25(a).

  1. Order by severity: 50, 30.
  2. 50 combined with 30: 50 + 30 × 50% = 65 → 65
  3. Combined value 65 rounds to the nearest 10: 70%.

40%, 30%, and 20%

Three ratings combined in order of severity, then rounded once.

  1. Order by severity: 40, 30, 20.
  2. 40 combined with 30: 40 + 30 × 60% = 58 → 58
  3. 58 combined with 20: 58 + 20 × 42% = 66.4 → 66
  4. Combined value 66 rounds to the nearest 10: 70%.

60% and 20%

Two ratings combined under 38 CFR 4.25.

  1. Order by severity: 60, 20.
  2. 60 combined with 20: 60 + 20 × 40% = 68 → 68
  3. Combined value 68 rounds to the nearest 10: 70%.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 70% combined rating meet the TDIU percentage test?

It depends on how the 70% is built. 38 CFR 4.16(a) has two branches: one disability at 60% or more, or two or more disabilities with one at 40% or more and a combined rating of 70% or more. A single 70% disability meets the first branch. Two or more disabilities that combine to 70% meet the second branch only if one of them is at least 40%. The TDIU checker on this site reports both the regulation and VA.gov’s shorter summary.

Do dependents raise 70% pay?

Yes. Dependent amounts in the VA table apply at 30% and above. The rows on this page are the published 70% amounts, including spouse, parents, and one child. Additional children and spouse Aid and Attendance are the added amounts below the basic table.

How do 50% and 30% become 70%?

That pair is an example in 38 CFR 4.25(a). 50 combined with 30 is 65, and 65 rounds to 70%. The step-by-step is on this page.
